Vintage is the new 'IN'

What’s better than eating ice cream on a hot day? Eating ice cream in a vintage vehicle on a hot day!

On the 15th November 2017, students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic had the opportunity to enjoy unique flavours of ice cream, and get pictured with the vintage mobile volkswagen bars with their friends in between classes at Makan Place, during the Threads of Courage Bazaar.

The Threads of Courage Bazaar was organized by a group of Year 3 Business and Social Enterprise students - Amarpreet Kaur, Ellen Wong, Low Hui Juan, Lee Ping Swen and Ng Zi Qian - as part of their partnership with Fei Yue Family Service Centre. Threads of Courage (TOC) is an initiative founded in November 2016, and it aims to empower, support and equip their participants - mainly comprising of people who are unable to find stable employment due to various factors - with necessary sewing skills needed for them to create and sell the items to earn income. Mentorship and training sessions are offered to participants to learn the skill of sewing, and they are then given the fabrics to work on the products at home, at their own pace. “Out of the sales made from the products, 70% of the amount goes directly to the beneficiaries, while 30% is ploughed back into TOC to aid in the operational and material costs.” Sheena Lim, Community Partnership Executive at Fei Yue shared during the event.

During the busy lunch hour, students and lecturers alike came by to show their support for the cause, by purchasing the stuffed toys, double-sided drawstring bags, brooches as well as the backrests.

“The backrests and drawstring bags were some of our best-sellers, and the crowd naturally seemed to be drawn to their versatility and aesthetic appeal”, recounts Low Hui Juan, one of the group members manning the booth and managing the sales for the day.

Local ice-cream caterer, Scoopy’s & Cream, stepped in to sponsor 200 servings worth of ice cream for the event, after hearing about what TOC stood for. “We were extremely honoured to be a part of such a meaningful bazaar. We believed our Ice Cream service would help boost the awareness of the TOC movement and allow it the recognition it deserves! Hence, our decision to partake in the bazaar by sponsoring our best selling flavours of Scoopy's ice cream and placing our vintage VW Mobile booth on display for photo taking opportunities - To keep everyone smiling and happy is our biggest goal after all!” Tobias Peng, representative from Scoopy’s & Cream commented.

Sheena expressed her gratitude towards Scoopy’s & Cream’s gesture. “Thank you Scoopy’s for your sponsorship of ice cream! It definitely helped to draw crowd to our Threads of Courage booth and raise awareness of our social cause of empowerment!”

Scoopy’s & Cream has been an ice cream caterer and supplier for hotels, restaurants & cafes, events & parties since 2007. Students had the opportunity to choose between 6 flavours of Scoopy’s very own house-made ice cream; Thai Iced Milk Tea, Mango Flesh Mania, Cream Thai Coconut, Blueberry Swirl, Double Chocolate Chip and Strawberry Swirl.

In order to receive the free ice cream ; students were required to follow the instagram pages of both @ThreadsofCourage, as well as @SuperIceCreamTruck. They then proceeded to the red volkswagen booth to choose their ice cream flavour and redeem it.

Halfway through the event, popular flavours such as Mango Flesh Mania, Cream Thai Coconut and Blueberry Swirl were starting to run out, due to the students’ preferences.

“...I think it’s (Cream Thai Coconut) very unique because it’s a flavour that I’ve never tried before. It’s also very refreshing and very light on the palate.”

A group of friends complimented the Blueberry Swirl flavour. “It tastes like jam, but there’s vanilla so it’s not very sweet. You won’t be sick of it.”

Students had a positive overview of the whole Threads of Courage Bazaar, and the ice cream from Scoopy’s & Cream. “I like how Scoopy’s & Cream is actually coming together to contribute back to society by partnering up with Threads of Courage.”
